Mukuru Slum Education Project

Joy House School

Most people recognize the critical link between the important foundation which Nursery, pre-school and primary education provides, and the level of success in education students will experience later on. Those first formative years are essential to a child’s education and development as a whole. The Kenyan government recognizes this link and encourages communities to set up local nursery, pre-schools and primary. However, with no financial support, the reality is that Nursery, pre-schools are almost always run on a voluntary basis without any resources, and most teachers work for free, often in buildings which are unsuitable and even unsafe for children. Joy house is making a difference to early education by ensuring that the Nursery, pre-schools and Primary are equipped with the essential components necessary to providing this project: enthusiastic teachers, varied learning resources, a fun place to learn, and coordinated support from Joy House at a senior level. Joy House is providing a benefit to hundreds of young children, providing local employment to pre-school teachers, helping communities to look after their most vulnerable youngsters.

The school is located in Mukuru Slum, which is the second largest in Kenya, second only to the Kibera slums, which is considered one of the largest slums in the world. Within the Mukuru Slums there is a population of over half a million people where access to clean water, sanitation, education and medical facilities is at its lowest. Crime, drugs, prostitution, abortions and many other vices are the order of the day. It is a normal thing to find a premature baby aborted and thrown along the pathways where robberies and drugs are a persistent problem.
It is these conditions that made us initiate the idea of starting education programs within these slums.

Maasai Education Development Project

Osupuko Community School-Maasai School

The school commonly referred to as Maasai School was discovered by our team one year ago and we immediately enrolled them under our community development initiative in 2012. Today, 52 children from less fortunate Maasai backgrounds call it their school. The Centre is located in the western part of Nairobi in Ngong region in the heart of Maasai land.

Most of our children come from sad and tragic situations of broken homes, disabilities, assault and abandonment in the Maasai community. Girls are at a higher risk of being married off at an early age and also in danger of Female Genital Mutilation [FGM] which is a common practice among the Maasai people.

Through Pack For A Purpose, we get some school supplies though the demand is very high. In addition, the donations given help us in catering for the needs of the pupils and running of the school. Our doors also remain open to volunteer teachers, donation of school supplies, new and used clothes and shoes, used or new laptops among others. We are also open to new ideas on how we can improve this Maasai education development initiative
