An early departure from Nairobi this morning takes us by road, heading north. We pass Thika and continue past some breathtaking scenery dotted with rushing mountain streams and fields of tea. We pass through Nanyuki town and eventually get to the dusty border outpost of Isiolo. From here, it’s just a little longer to your luxury tented camp set under the shade of doum palms along the Ewaso Nyiro River. Enjoy lunch before setting out on an afternoon game drive in Samburu National Reserve.

DAY 3 : SAMBURU

samburu (2)samburu (1)

Samburu National Reserve is spectacular. The dry plains are bisected by the meandering Ewaso Nyiro River, with Mt. Kenya visible in the background. Samburu is a small reserve, but rich in wildlife. Watch for several species endemic to the region like gerenuk and Grevy’s zebra. Thanks to a healthy population of plains game like gazelle, impala and zebras, the big cat predators like lion, leopard and cheetah can also be found here. Birdlife is also fantastic – among the birds you might spot on your morning and afternoon game drives are sunbirds, Lilac-breasted Roller, Secretary Bird and Superb Starling, to name just a few.

DAY 4 : SAMBURU - LAKE NAKURU

Leaving Samburu behind today, you will travel south, crossing the northernmost foothills of Mount Kenya until you reach Nanyuki. Here, your route will turn west to Nyahururu, still known to many as Thomson’s Falls. Continue on to Lake Nakuru, arriving in time for lunch. Later, take a walk around the grounds of the camp and enjoy a leisurely afternoon.

Leave camp this morning with a picnic lunch to spend the day game viewing in Lake Nakuru National Park. DAY 6 : LAKE NAKURU - MAASAI MARA

10-19-3

Enjoy an early breakfast before setting out for Kenya’s most famous national park, the Masai Mara. Your drive takes you through Narok and across the “breadbasket” of Kenya, covered with acres of wheat and barley. Arrive at your camp in time for lunch and then later an afternoon game drive in the Mara.

DAY 7 & 8 : MAASAI MARA

11-110-4

Enjoy two full days of game viewing in the Masai Mara. Be sure to have your check list handy on your morning and afternoon game drives, as you will surely check off most of your list. The Masai Mara was original established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1961 with only 520 square kilometers. Today, the reserve encompasses over 1,500 square kilometers and is teeming with plains game like gazelle, impala, giraffe and buffalo. You will find all the Big Five in the Masai Mara, along with more than 470 species of birds – both migrant and resident. And of course, the Masai Mara is the setting for the largest animal migration on earth when each year millions of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game cross the Mara River from Tanzania in search of green grass and fresh pasture.

DAY 9 : NAIROBI - DEPART

karenbgiraffe

Your time in the Mara ends all too quickly today as you leave after breakfast and drive across the acres of wheat and barley farms past Narok and up the Great Rift Valley escarpment towards Nairobi. After included lunch, the words of author Karen Blixen come to life as you visit her home and stroll the grounds set under the Ngong Hills. Be entertained at the Giraffe Center when you are greeted by the graceful Rothschilds giraffes intent on finding pellets of food in your hands. There is time to freshen up in our Partner Lounge before dinner at the Pampa Grill and a late evening transfer to the airport for your flight home.
